Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital board appoints new chief executive
Major progress toward the creation of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital occurred this week, when the MLK hospital board named Dr. Elaine Batchlor as the institution’s new chief executive officer. Sanchez Adobe, L.A.'s oldest building? - Architectural sites that define our community
Hidden in plain sight, on a tree-lined street in Baldwin Hills, what could be the oldest building in Los Angeles: an adobe building dating from the late 1700s. Archival materials date the Sanchez Adobe, located on Don Felipe Drive, to as early as 1791, meaning the South Los Angeles building likely surpasses the Avila Adobe on Olvera Street, the city’s acknowledged title holder, by 20 years of age. Endeavour's final journey
Space shuttle Endeavour, which orbited the earth on 25 missions, is set to make its final journey next month, leaving the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral for the last time and arriving in Los Angeles on September 20. Endeavour will travel piggyback atop a Boeing 747 to LAX, where it will remain in a United Airlines Hangar while engineers from NASA prepare it for its journey to the California Science Center... Supervisor Ridley-Thomas marks National Health Center Week with two-mile community walk
Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, community stakeholders and county employees, kicked off National Health Center Week in the Second Supervisorial District with a two-mile walk at St. John’s Well Child and Family Center in Los Angeles. The walk included a stop at Umma Community Clinic and ended at Mount Carmel Park where a host of free health services awaited, including rapid HIV testing, blood pressure screenings, and a healthy cooking demonstration... Supervisors greenlight affordable housing for Willowbrook
A 1.72-acre of land, where four abandoned houses have been the site of blight and a source of nuisance in the Willowbrook community soon will be transformed into a new 55-unit affordable housing complex. At its meeting Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors authorized a conditional use housing permit championed by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, which grants A Community of Friends, a non-profit affordable housing developer, the rights to demolish the residences and construct a 55-unit affordable housing complex on Avalon Boulevard in Willowbrook... Board approves innovative General Relief pilot program
At its meeting Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors approved a pilot program with St. John’s Well Child and Family Center that authorizes St. John’s staff to identify and assist mentally and physically disabled General Relief (GR) recipients with obtaining Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Authorization of the pilot program allows St. John’s Well Child and Family Center staff and Department of Public Social Services staff to go out into communities in the Second District to assist disabled residents with completing the SSI application, getting supportive services and if needed, initiating referrals to a health or mental health provider....
