Supervisor Ridley-Thomas honored the leadership of the Empowerment Congress which joined forces with the Second District to host the 2009 Annual Budget Summit on January 31, 2009. More than 1,200 constituents attended the successful conference (PDF) about the budget crisis. Chair Guy Leemhuis also spoke on behalf of the Empowerment Congress leadership.

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas recognizes Korean American Day at the L.A. County Board of Supervisors meeting. The Korean community was represented by Dr. Sang Won Park, Chairman of the Korean American Foundation (L.A. Chapter) and Dr. Byung Wok Yoon, Honorary National President of the Korean American Foundation, among others.
The L.A. County Board of Supervisors honored KNBC reporter and weekend anchor, Furnell Chatman, who is retiring after 40 years in broadcast journalism.
