Gertrude Baines, the world’s oldest person, died today at the age of 115. Supervisor Ridley-Thomas issued the following statement upon the death of Baines at a convalescent home in the West Adams area of the Second District:
“Gertrude Baines was a beacon in our community — someone whose life demonstrated perseverance in the truest sense of the word. She lived from Jim Crow to Barack Obama, sustained by faith, the company of others and her beloved Los Angeles Dodgers.”

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas and Chief of Staff Sylvia Drew Ivie helped Gertrude Baines celebrate her 115th birthday yesterday. Baines, who lives in the West Adams neighborhood of the Second District, is the world’s oldest living human being according to Guinness World Records.
