Two South Los Angeles parks will soon receive upgrades. At its meeting Wednesday, the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of renovating both Mona and Bethune Parks located at 2291 East 121st Street in Willowbrook and 1244 East 61st Street in Florence-Firestone.
The action taken by the Board authorizes the Department of Parks and Recreation to move forward with plans to turn both locations into more spacious, useful and attractive resources.
At Bethune Park, the existing meeting room, foyer and restrooms will be demolished and rebuilt. The park also will receive new basketball rims, irrigation turf, barbeques, handball courts, and a new gym entrance that includes a new main office, foyer and shower.
At Mona Park, the community room will receive exterior improvements to the existing walkway and upgraded recreation and sports equipment, including new poles, rims, and backboards for the basketball court, and a new shuffle board.
“These parks and recreational facilities are important community resources and get constant use, so we must do all that we can to keep them up to date and in good shape,” said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. “I look forward to walking into both facilities once the improvements are completed.”
After the upgrades are completed, the restrooms at both parks will comply with Americans with Disabilities guidelines. In addition, the improvements at both community rooms will include incorporating low water use and efficient electrical energy saving fixtures.
The Department of Parks and Recreation will now select a design consultant and constructor to work on both projects; the upgrades and improvements are anticipated to be completed by the end of next year.
