Message from MRT, January 2013

Happy New Year and I welcome you to the first newsletter of 2013. Last year was tremendous, and this year will be exciting as well, with a sustained focus on job creation, the implementation of health care reform and further development of the Martin Luther King, Jr. medical campus. It would be remiss, however, not to acknowledge that both across the country and here at home; the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut continues to haunt us. Unfortunately, here in Los Angeles County too many people can sympathize with those who lost loved ones that day. Here too, gun violence takes a terrible toll, and as we head toward the birthday weekend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., more than ever we must reaffirm our commitment to his legacy of non-violence. On Saturday, January 19, we will mark Dr. King’s holiday with the 21st annual Empowerment Congress Summit. We will focus on Dr. King’s ideals and also host a one-of-a-kind mayoral debate. Visit www.empowermentcongress.org to register now. I look forward to seeing you there.
