Crenshaw/South Bay Transit Corridor

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Ken Alpern writes in City Watch today:

In the past two weeks, we’ve heard talk about the need to expedite planning, funding and construction for the Wilshire Subway and for the Crenshaw Corridor Project. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa held a press conference to expedite the Wilshire Subway to a faster timeline than 20 years…and I suspect most Angelenos would agree.

Similarly, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas held his own press conference and pointed out the need to properly plan for the Crenshaw Corridor Project, which will either be a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or a Light Rail Transit (LRT) that would connect the Green Line to the Expo Line (the current plan … and maybe the Wilshire/Purple Line and even Red Line as well … a proposed second phase).

Simply put, I think that the Crenshaw Corridor Project should be a LRT, and not a BRT, in order to avoid a repeat of the Orange Line mistake that had a cowardly political cadre in the San Fernando Valley let a few NIMBY’s spoil the lot for the majority who always, always, always wanted rail. Ridley-Thomas said the same, and I commend him for his visionary stance.

Ridley-Thomas To Lead New MTA Chief On Tour Along Crenshaw Transit Corridor Today

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas on Tuesday will lead newly-appointed Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chief Executive Officer Arthur T. Leahy on a tour along the Crenshaw Transit Corridor, part of a major project to improve public transit services in the Crenshaw Corridor between Wilshire and El Segundo Boulevards.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.

WHERE: Corner of Crenshaw Blvd. and Martin Luther King Blvd. (First stop of tour in front of the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Shopping Mall)

Mobility requirements in the corridor have been well documented in many studies, over more than 15 years, including the Crenshaw-Prairie Corridor Preliminary Planning Study (1994), the Route Refinement Study (2000), the Major Investment Study (MIS) (2003), and the 2004 Regional Transportation Plan.

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas, a voting member of the MTA board, will direct the tour of proposed transit stops along the corridor. Major transit investments planned for the corridor will improve mobility in the Crenshaw Transit Corridor and serve as an “economic engine” for the Second District.

The Crenshaw Transit Corridor extends approximately 10 miles from Wilshire Boulevard on the north to El Segundo Boulevard on the south. The overall goal of the proposed project is to connect Crenshaw with existing lines, such as the Metro Green Line, the Exposition Light Rail Line, which is currently under construction, and the “Subway to the Sea” down Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles International Airport and communities in the South Bay.
