On Saturday, September 19th, from 9:00 a.m. till noon, over 12,000 volunteers from all over Los Angeles will take action to rid our beaches and inland waterways of unsightly and harmful debris. Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) is an international event with over 60 countries around the world participating, making it one of the largest volunteer efforts on the planet!
Come join us at one of over 70 cleanup locations throughout Los Angeles County. Find the one nearest you and help clean our oceans and beautify your community.
Last year, over 12,000 volunteers from Los Angeles County joined together to pick up over 180,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches and waterways. This year, lets all take the challenge to do more than that!
Coastal Cleanup Day is a fun way for individuals, neighborhoods, schools, community and company volunteer groups to get involved and demonstrate their commitment to healthy water. So bring your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to participate with the thousands of volunteers around the world in taking a stand against ocean pollution on Coastal Cleanup Day.
See you at the beach! (Or river, park, lake, or creek…)
California Coastal Cleanup Day is coordinated in Los Angeles County by Heal the Bay in conjunction with the California Coastal Commission and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors.
For locations throughout the rest of California, please call 800-COAST-4U or visit the California Coastal Commission.
From CNS: The Board of Supervisors voted today to prohibit smoking in County parks with some exceptions. Citing secondhand smoke as the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States, the board followed the Department of Parks and Recreation’s recommendation in voting in favor of the ban.
Smoking will be allowed in designated areas of recreational facilities run by outside contractors or lessees, such as golf courses and tennis courts. Special exceptions will also be made for actors in productions under permit or for models in permitted photography sessions.
Several advocates, including representatives from the American Lung and American Heart associations, appeared before the board in favor of the proposal.
According to the department’s report to the board, 52,000 non-smokers die of exposure to secondhand smoke in the U.S. each year. The medical and other costs to U.S. non-smokers suffering from lung cancer or heart disease total nearly $6 billion annually, according to the report.
Some contractors expressed concern that a complete smoking ban would hurt attendance and revenues. The department was unable to quantify the economic impact of a total ban, but suggested designated smoking areas in a compromise move.
In the video above, members of the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Los Angeles County celebrate their victory and express gratitude to the Board of Supervisors.

The Los Angeles County Swim Team, 97 youth from three South Los Angeles communities, won the 2009 USA State Swim Championship in San Diego on July 18. The team, representing Jesse Owens, Victoria and Ted Watkins parks of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, is made up of almost 100 boys and girls from 10 to 18 years old.
“We are so proud of the accomplishments of these youth, their commitment and their drive to succeed,” said Russ Guiney, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Competing against 20 other teams and 800 competitors from all over California, the L.A. County Swim Team garnered 100 gold, silver and bronze medals in 12 events that tested swimmers in every competitive stoke.
“We shocked everyone out there. They were asking who we were and where we were from,” said Fernando Medina, swim coach at Victoria Park Pool. “We made a huge impact as a team.” Competing in the event for the first time, the team from Los Angeles County out swam perennial powerhouse teams from throughout California.
The team is supported by the Aquatic Foundation of Metropolitan Los Angeles, coached by Department of Parks and Recreation employees Medina, Nick Orozco, Christina Melendez and Tony Martinez and trains at Los Angeles County pools operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
California State Games is a festival of Olympic-style competition for California’s amateur athletes of all ages and abilities. State Games is a community-based member of the United States Olympic Committee. In addition to Summer State Games, they host the California Winter Games with figure skating, ice hockey, skiing and snowboarding.
The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation will provide free lunches and snacks to children across LA County. This health focused program was created to reverse the growing percentage of obese youth in the United States and provide a meal for children who otherwise wouldn’t eat lunch during the summer months. Each week children ages 1 to 18 can receive a nutritious lunch and snack, Monday through Friday until August 28 free of charge. The types of food served during the program include baked chips, sandwiches, granola bars, fresh fruits and juices, muffins and healthy dairy products such as string cheese and yogurt. In order for participating parks to qualify for the program, they must service an elementary, middle or high school that has more than 50% of its students receiving reduced or free lunch. The only requirement for recipients is that they are 18 years or younger.
UPDATE: On Monday, July 6, 2009, Los Angeles County Parks opened their doors for the Summer Lunch and Snack Program. At the close of the first day, approximately 1,605 lunches and 1,395 snacks were served to children ages 1 to 18 years throughout the Second District. Lunches included a sandwich, snack, fresh fruit and milk. All parks are selected based on percentage of children who receive free or reduced lunch at nearby schools.
