BOARD TO CONSIDER ITEMS TO DECIDE FUTURE OF A NEW MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. HOSPITAL
Come Out and Let Your Voice Be Heard!
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will consider two crucial items on Tuesday, August 18 at noon, that will directly affect plans to open a new Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital.
The Supervisors will consider granting authorization for the County’s Chief Executive Officer to proceed with negotiations with University of California representatives, including presenting the County’s proposal for opening a new Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital.
The Board will also consider the approval of the capital program for the construction of a hospital, emergency room, new Multi-service Ambulatory Care Center and an ancillary services building for MLK, a pre-requisite to restoring its in-patient services.
Residents of Los Angeles are encouraged to make their voices heard. Opening a new hospital is Supervisor Ridley-Thomas’ top priority.
On his second day in office, he visited the Watts-Willowbrook facility where he publicly announced an initiative to "jump start" the process of restoring full hospital and emergency room services to the area.
In March, the Board announced that the County had made considerable progress on a proposed plan involving the University of California (UC) and State of California, that would lead to the eventual opening of a new Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital by late 2012.
The County’s CEO’s William T Fujioka entered into discussions and negotiations with UC System and state officials to pursue the possibility of creating a new hospital to serve residents of South Los Angeles. The UC Board of Regents is scheduled to vote next month on the proposed deal.
The proposed plan calls for a 120-bed hospital with an emergency room. The facility would be a private, non-profit hospital run by an independent board of directors, equally controlled by Los Angeles County and the UC.
Tuesday’s hearing will take place in the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration Board Hearing Room, 381B, 500 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
