The days when residents of the El Camino Village neighborhood had few options for swimming other than at the park’s murky lake, officially are over. After four years of anticipation, $16.5 million worth of new recreational facilities and improvements were unveiled on August 30. New facilities at Alondra park include a 25 x 25 meter pool, a 6,000-square-foot pool house and recreation building, and a 3,000 – square-foot water “splash pad” area — all of which will be welcome relief as 2012 is on schedule to become the hottest year in United States history. The upgraded park, however, has other amenities as well, including a 14,000-square-foot skateboard park, a new restroom building, and new picnic shelters.
On a different note, the park is now an environmental, as well as recreational, standout. The project incorporates design elements that aim to conserve water usage and minimize run-off, such as drought tolerant landscaping. Other green building features have been included that meet Silver Certification requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.
