Supervisor Ridley-Thomas recognizes Lennox Math Science & Technology Academy achievement for being named the 21st best high school in America by US News & World Report. Lennox Academy is one of many schools in the Second District that is empowering students and teachers and delivering results.
Veteran KNBC News Reporter/Anchor Furnell Chatman Honored

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas honors veteran KNBC 4 news reporter/anchor Furnell Chatman at the January 13, 2009 Board of Supervisors meeting. Chatman was retiring after 40 years of dedicated service to the world of broadcasting. Outside of his work as an award-winning television journalist, Chatman also volunteered for a variety of community events, including the County's annual “Volunteer of the Year" Awards luncheon.
Grand Re-Opening of the Gardena Mayme Dear Library

After being closed for a year for refurbishment, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas launches the grand re-opening of the Gardena Mayme Dear Library. The remodeling included new carpet and shelving, interior and exterior paint, ceiling tile and window covering replacement, new public service desk, and ADA upgrades to the public restrooms. The project was funded by the Second District and the Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas honors local 2nd District branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), one of the oldest and most influential civil rights organizations in the United States at the February 10, 2009 Board of Supervisors meeting. The NAACP centennial celebration was held on February 12, 2009.
Tavis Smiley Hosts the 10th Anniversary of the State of the Black Union

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas honored PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley at the February 24, 2009 Board of Supervisors meeting, in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the State of the Black Union. The remarkable event was held on February 28, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Green Dot Animo Pat Brown High School Open House

Supervisor Ridley-Thomas, joined by Animo Pat Brown Principal, Chad Solao, and Assembly member, Isadore Hall attended the Open House celebration of Animo Pat Brown Charter High School in Florence-Firestone. Animo Pat Brown Charter High School is the highest performing Green Dot School with a 7.49 API. There are currently 17 Green Dot high schools in the 2nd Supervisorial District.
